Orange bitters vs Angostura — what’s the difference?

Angostura bitters and orange bitters are both cocktail bitters — high-alcohol flavour extracts — but they do different jobs. Angostura brings warm baking spice, clove and gentian root bitterness. Orange bitters add bright citrus peel and floral top notes without replacing fresh citrus juice.

Most home bars need Angostura first. Orange bitters are the second bottle that upgrades Old Fashioneds, Martinis and Champagne cocktails.

Flavour profile comparison

Angostura (from Trinidad) tastes of cinnamon, clove, cardamom and bitter gentian — the backbone of Old Fashioneds, Manhattans and Champagne cocktails. A few dashes transform soda water into an actual drink.

Orange bitters (Regans' No. 6, Fee Brothers, Angostura Orange) emphasise bitter orange peel, cardamom and sometimes coriander. They add aroma rather than sourness — you still need fresh lemon or lime in sours.

Cocktails that use Angostura

Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Whiskey Sour (dashes on foam), Champagne cocktail, Mai Tai finish, Dark & Stormy. If you own one bitters bottle, make it Angostura.

Cocktails that use orange bitters

Old Fashioned (with bourbon — orange + Angostura together is classic), Martini (especially gin), Corpse Reviver No. 2, Champagne cocktail, Negroni variations. Many bartenders use both bitters in an Old Fashioned — one dash each.

Do you need both?

For a minimal bar: Angostura only. If you make Old Fashioneds and Martinis regularly, add Regans' Orange Bitters No. 6 — widely available in UK online shops. Angostura Orange is a milder single-bottle compromise but purists keep separate bottles.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Angostura bitters and orange bitters?

Angostura is spice-heavy (clove, cinnamon, gentian). Orange bitters focus on bitter orange peel and floral notes. They complement rather than substitute each other.

Can I substitute orange bitters for Angostura?

Not directly — an Old Fashioned with only orange bitters lacks the warm spice backbone. Use both or stick to Angostura if choosing one.

How much is a dash of bitters?

Roughly 0.9ml — a few drops from the dasher top. Two to three dashes is standard in stirred cocktails.

Best orange bitters UK?

Regans' Orange Bitters No. 6 and Fee Brothers Orange are easy to find online. Angostura Orange is a good all-rounder if you want one bottle.
