El Jimador is the clearest starting point when the budget is tight. Master of Malt listed the 70cl bottle at £25.96 and Tesco at £26.75 when this guide was reviewed. Both listings describe it as 100% agave; Tesco lists citrus, pepper and herbal notes and 38% ABV.

Best cocktail upgrade: Olmeca Altos Plata

Olmeca Altos Plata was £29.99 on a price drop at Master of Malt, against a displayed regular price of £34.95. It is a 38% blanco made with 100% agave from Los Altos in Jalisco. The important buying point is the promotion: it belongs in the £30 comparison while that offer exists, not permanently in an “under £20” list.

Best at 40% ABV: Espolòn Blanco

Espolòn Blanco was £30 for 70cl at Master of Malt when checked. The listing identifies 100% blue agave, 40% ABV and a peppery citrus profile. That slightly higher bottling strength can help in a shaken drink, where dilution and sharp lime can flatten a weaker spirit.

What “100% agave” actually tells you

Tequila is made from blue Weber agave in authorised regions of Mexico. A bottle labelled 100% agave uses agave sugars for fermentation. Tequila without that statement can be made in the “mixto” category, where at least 51% of fermentable sugars come from agave and the remainder can come from other permitted sugars.

The label is a useful first filter at the budget end, but it does not prove that one bottle tastes better than another. Production method, maturity of the agave, cooking, fermentation, distillation, dilution and any permitted treatment all affect the result. Use “100% agave” to narrow the shelf, then compare price, strength and the drink you plan to make.

Blanco, reposado or gold for cocktails?

• Blanco or plata: unaged or briefly rested, with direct agave, pepper, herb and citrus character. This is the default budget choice for Margaritas, Palomas and Ranch Water.

• Normal price versus loyalty offer. Record the end date if a recommendation depends on a Clubcard or member price.
• Delivery. A £26 bottle with £5.95 delivery may cost more than a £30 supermarket bottle.
