Mojito without mint — what to use instead
A Mojito without mint is still a rum, lime and soda drink — you lose the herbal top note but the structure stays refreshing. Basil is the closest substitute; cucumber and elderflower push the drink in a different but delicious direction.
If you have no fresh herbs at all, try a Daiquiri (rum, lime, sugar) or a Highball-style rum cooler — same energy, less fuss.
Best mint substitutes
Fresh basil — bruise 6–8 leaves gently (do not shred). Tastes brighter and more anise than mint; pairs brilliantly with white rum. Thai basil is too intense — use sweet basil.
Cucumber — muddle thin slices with lime and sugar for a cleaner, spa-style cooler. Elderflower cordial — 10ml replaces mint's floral note; reduce simple syrup to avoid sweetness.
Mint-free Mojito method
50ml white rum, 25ml fresh lime juice, 15ml simple syrup, 6 basil leaves (or cucumber slices), soda water, crushed ice. Bruise herb with syrup, add lime and rum, fill with crushed ice, top with soda, stir gently.
For the classic mint version see our rum cocktail hub — Havana Club 3 Year is the traditional choice.
If you skip herbs entirely
Daiquiri — 60ml rum, 25ml lime, 20ml syrup, shake, strain. Rum Collins — same as Mojito structure without herbs. Dark & Stormy if you have ginger beer instead of soda.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Mojito without mint?
Yes — use basil, cucumber or elderflower. The drink is still refreshing; it just reads differently.
What herb replaces mint in cocktails?
Basil is the best Mojito swap. Rosemary and thyme work in gin drinks but overpower rum.
Mojito without mint name?
Sometimes called a Southside with basil, or simply a rum cooler with lime and soda.
