What to Mix with Baileys Besides Coffee: Seven Reliable Serves
Measured Baileys pairings for chocolate, milk, ice cream and spirits—plus the reason cola and citrus can split Irish cream.
·Updated ·8 min read·The Cocktail Pub editorial desk
The easiest things to mix with Baileys besides coffee are milk, hot chocolate, chocolate milk and ice cream. For a less dessert-like drink, lengthen 25ml of Baileys with 75ml cold milk over ice. For something richer, combine 25ml Baileys, 25ml Tia Maria and 50ml milk. Avoid pouring Baileys straight into cola, tonic or citrus juice if you want a smooth drink: acidic mixers can make its dairy cream separate.
Baileys Original is a sweet, 17% ABV Irish cream liqueur made with Irish dairy cream, whiskey and spirits, with chocolate and vanilla flavours. That gives it two useful pairing rules: choose a mixer that dilutes the sweetness, and keep strongly acidic liquids away from the cream. The official UK product page lists milk, including lactose, as an allergen.
Quick answer: the best Baileys mixers
| Mixer | Starting ratio | Result | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold milk | 25ml Baileys + 75ml milk | Light, creamy and less sweet | Use very cold milk and plenty of ice |
| Hot chocolate | 25ml Baileys + 125ml hot chocolate | Chocolate-led winter serve | Add Baileys after heating; do not boil it |
| Chocolate milk | 25ml Baileys + 75ml chocolate milk | Cold, simple dessert drink | Choose a less-sweet chocolate milk |
| Vanilla ice cream | 25ml Baileys + 2 scoops | Thick adult milkshake or affogato-style dessert | No extra syrup at first |
| Tia Maria and milk | 25ml + 25ml + 50ml milk | Coffee-chocolate flavour without hot coffee | Both liqueurs are sweet, so milk is important |
| Vodka and milk | 25ml + 15ml + 60ml milk | Drier, stronger creamy cocktail | Measure the vodka; it raises strength quickly |
| Irish whiskey and ice | 25ml + 15ml | Shorter and less confectionery | Stir well over a full glass of ice |
These are starting ratios, not rules. Baileys already contains sugar, cream and alcohol, so add the mixer gradually and taste before adding syrups, whipped cream or chocolate sauce. Check the current Baileys Original price.
1. Milk: the most useful all-round mixer
Cold milk softens Baileys without introducing another dominant flavour. Start with one part Baileys to three parts milk: 25ml and 75ml over a tall glass filled with ice. Stir for ten seconds. If it still feels too sweet, add another 25ml milk rather than more ice, which eventually makes the drink watery.
Whole milk produces the fullest texture, but semi-skimmed makes a lighter long drink. Oat or almond drink can change the flavour, but it does not make the serve dairy-free: Original Baileys itself contains milk and lactose.
2. Hot chocolate: add Baileys after heating
Make 125ml of hot chocolate, take it off the heat, then stir in 25ml Baileys. Adding the liqueur at the end gives better control and avoids simmering away aroma. The Baileys brand's own hot-chocolate recipe uses 50ml liqueur with 100ml milk and toppings; our lower-strength starting ratio is easier to balance when the chocolate powder is already sweet.
Taste before adding marshmallows, caramel sauce or whipped cream. If the drink is cloying, a tiny pinch of salt or another splash of unsweetened milk is more useful than extra cocoa powder.
3. Cold chocolate milk: the two-ingredient option
Pour 25ml Baileys and 75ml chilled chocolate milk over ice, then stir. This is faster than a milkshake and needs no blender. A dark or less-sweet chocolate milk gives the liqueur's vanilla and whiskey notes more room than a heavily sweetened one.
For a colder, frothier version, shake the two liquids with ice for eight seconds and strain over fresh ice. Do not add lemon, orange juice or cola for “brightness”; use a small pinch of salt instead.
4. Vanilla ice cream: milkshake or simple pour-over
For the simplest version, pour 25ml Baileys over two scoops of vanilla ice cream. For a drinkable shake, blend two scoops, 25ml Baileys and 50ml milk. Add milk 15ml at a time if the blender stalls.
The official Baileys recipe collection also uses the liqueur in milkshakes and frozen hot chocolate. The combination works because the dairy base matches the liqueur rather than destabilising it. Keep the first version plain; biscuits, sauce and whipped cream can all be added later, but they are difficult to remove.
5. Baileys and Tia Maria: control the sweetness
Baileys and Tia Maria can be mixed, but equal measures on their own make a very sweet, liqueur-heavy drink. A better starting build is 25ml Baileys, 25ml Tia Maria and 50ml cold milk over ice. Stir and add another 25ml milk if required. Check the current Tia Maria price.
If you want a shaken cocktail, use 25ml Baileys, 20ml Tia Maria, 20ml vodka and 30ml milk. Shake with plenty of ice and strain into a small chilled glass. This is richer than our Espresso Martini, so serve it as a short drink rather than a large highball.
6. Vodka and milk: a drier creamy cocktail
Build 25ml Baileys, 15ml unflavoured vodka and 60ml milk over ice. Vodka increases strength without adding more sugar, while milk keeps the texture relaxed. Do not free-pour: 25ml Baileys at 17% plus 15ml vodka at 40% contains much more alcohol than Baileys alone even though the cream can hide it.
For chocolate flavour, dust the finished surface with cocoa rather than adding syrup. For coffee flavour without hot coffee, use the Tia Maria version above.
7. Irish whiskey: a short after-dinner serve
Stir 25ml Baileys and 15ml Irish whiskey over a full rocks glass of ice for 15–20 seconds. The extra whiskey makes the serve drier, warmer and more spirit-led. It is not a long mixer, but it is useful when straight Baileys feels too sweet.
Start with 15ml whiskey. Adding equal measures produces a substantially stronger drink and can overwhelm the cream. A large cube slows dilution, but ordinary fresh ice works well if the glass is full.
Can you mix Baileys with Coke?
You can put them in the same glass, but we do not recommend it as a smooth long drink. Baileys Original contains dairy cream. Coca-Cola Original lists phosphoric acid, while carbonation also makes the liquid acidic. When that acid meets the cream, its proteins can clump and the drink may look curdled. Diet cola does not solve the acidity problem.
This is a texture reaction, not proof that the Baileys was out of date. If you want cola in an after-dinner drink, mix cola with Irish whiskey or a coffee liqueur and serve the Baileys separately. Do not try to “rescue” a split glass with more Baileys.
Mixers to avoid—and better replacements
| Avoid mixing directly | What can happen | Use instead |
|---|---|---|
| Cola and diet cola | Acid can split the dairy cream | Cold milk or chocolate milk |
| Lemon, lime, orange or pineapple juice | Strong fruit acid can curdle the drink | Chocolate, vanilla or a non-acidic spice garnish |
| Tonic water | Acidity, bitterness and cream are a poor fit | Milk for length; whiskey for dryness |
| Soda water | Thin texture and possible separation | Milk or a blended ice-cream serve |
| Very hot liquid in a pan | Heat can damage texture and aroma | Stir Baileys into the finished hot drink |
A repeatable way to invent your own Baileys drink
- Begin with 25ml Baileys, not a large free-pour.
- Choose one compatible base: 75ml cold milk, 125ml hot chocolate or two scoops of ice cream.
- Choose at most one stronger partner: 15ml vodka or Irish whiskey, or 25ml coffee liqueur.
- Add ice and dilute before adding garnish.
- Taste for sweetness. Add milk for balance, not another syrup.

How this guide was checked
This is a researched pairing guide, not a blind tasting. We checked the current UK Baileys product specification, its official hot-chocolate and frozen-chocolate recipes, and Coca-Cola's published ingredients on 24 August 2026. The house ratios above deliberately begin smaller and less sweet so they can be adjusted without wasting a full serve.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the simplest mixer for Baileys?
Cold milk is the simplest. Start with 25ml Baileys and 75ml milk over ice. It lengthens the drink and reduces sweetness without fighting the chocolate, vanilla and cream flavours.
Can you mix Baileys with Coke?
It is possible, but acidic cola can make the dairy cream separate and form clumps. Use milk or chocolate milk for a smooth long drink, or mix cola with Irish whiskey and keep the Baileys separate.
Can you mix Baileys and Tia Maria?
Yes. Use 25ml of each with 50ml cold milk over ice. The milk matters because both liqueurs are sweet; add another splash if the first version is too rich.
Can you use oat milk with Baileys?
Yes for flavour and texture, but the finished drink is not dairy-free because Baileys Original contains Irish dairy cream and lactose. Check the specific bottle if using another Baileys product.
Does Baileys need to be refrigerated?
Follow the storage and best-before instructions on your bottle. Keep it sealed, away from direct light and temperature extremes, and do not use appearance or smell alone to override an expired label.
